Los equipos de valoración y cuidados geriátricos: expectativas defraudadas

Geriatric consultation teams began to be formed in the 1990s as interdisciplinary units. The aim was to introduce the approach of Geriatrics in Spanish hospitals. However, because the scheme lacked the necessary resources and had no prospects for growth in the medium term or direct responsibility for care, its efficiency has not been sufficiently evaluated, except in interventions in traumatology services. The present article discusses some proposals to improve the effectiveness of geriatric consultation teams, although what undoubtedly is needed to increase the utility of geriatric intervention is the team's participation in the patient's care plan, as well as post-discharge follow-up.
