Effects of quaternization and PEGylation on the biocompatibility, enzymatic degradability and antioxidant activity of chitosan derivatives

► The hydrophilicity of chitosan was increased after quaternization and PEGylation. ► mPEG with higher MW was more favorable for the improved biocompatibility. ► mPEG with higher MW facilitated lysozyme mediated degradation. ► Quaternized chitosan showed dose-dependent lipid peroxidation inhibition effect.
