► Nanostructured polyanilines were prepared with various morphology. ► Ionic liquid added to the reaction mixture controls the polyaniline morphology. ► Ionic liquids do not affect the chemical structure of polyaniline. ► Ionic liquids form soft templates which assemble polyaniline into nanostructures.
