► Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a stimulator of osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. ► RAW264.7 cells exposed to LPS form osteoclast-like multinucleated cells. ► Activating liver X receptor inhibits osteoclasts and promotes macrophage formation. ► These cells are highly phagocytic so could be involved in maintaining healthy tissue. ► Thus the LXR is involved in the fate determination of myeloid progenitor cells.
