Vesicularization of the endoplasmic reticulum is a fast response to plasma membrane injury

► Cell membrane permeabilization induces a rapid vesicularization of the endoplasmic reticulum. ► Vesicularization preserves the transport and barrier function of the membranes. ► Vesicularization may occur within seconds. ► A possible role of vesicularization in protection of the cell against Ca2+ overload is discussed.
