Lactobacillusacidophilus S-layer protein-mediated inhibition of Salmonella-induced apoptosis in Caco-2 cells

► In Caco-2 cells infected with Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344, apoptosis was mediated by caspase-3 activation. ►Lactobacillus S-layer proteins inhibited Salmonella-induced apoptosis in Caco-2 cells. ►Lactobacillus S-layer proteins protected against Salmonella-induced apoptosis through reduced caspase-3 activation. ► Salmonella-induced apoptotic cell damage was modified by S-layer proteins through the ERK1/2 signaling pathway.
