Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha represses the transcription of the estrogen receptor alpha gene in human breast cancer cells

► Estrogen receptor alpha is regulated under hypoxia. ► Hypoxia repressed ESR1 gene expression at the transcription level in human breast cancer cells. ► Our study shows that hypoxia regulates estrogen receptor alpha both at the transcriptional and posttranslational levels.
