► We examined the effects of hepatocyte STAT3 signaling during cholestasis in mice. ► Hepatocyte STAT3 offered protection from liver injury and fibrogenesis after BDL. ► STAT3-dependent soluble factors released from hepatocytes directly suppressed activated HSCs.
