► Doxorubicin is a potent cancer chemotherapy drug, but also causes cardiotoxicity. ► Dietary nitrate limits cardiac dysfunction, cell death, and mitochondrial damage. ► Nitrate reduces oxidative stress and induces antioxidant enzyme - peroxiredoxin 5. ► Elevated levels of nitrate do not hamper anti-cancer efficacy of doxorubicin in vitro. ► Inorganic nitrate may be an affordable therapy for alleviating drug cardiotoxicity.
