Clinical disease in sheep caused by bluetongue virus serotype 8, and prevention by an inactivated vaccine

► BTV-8 grown in mammalian or Culicoides cell-cultures used for challenge infection. ► Both BTV-8 virus preparations induced severe clinical signs in adult unvaccinated sheep. ► Vaccination reduced clinical signs and viraemia equally well after infection with both viruses.
