Efficacy of a Gal-lectin subunit vaccine against experimental Entamoeba histolytica infection and colitis in baboons (Papio sp.)

► Developed a new experimental model of E. histolytica infection in baboons. ► E. histolytica infection and inflammatory colitis was sustained for 90 days. ► A Gal-lectin-based intranasal synthetic peptide vaccine was efficacious. ► Vaccine efficacy was validated by fecal PCR, colonoscopy and pathology. ► Immunity correlated with the ELISA OD value for intestinal anti-lectin IgA.
