Garde à vue et consommation de stupéfiants et alcool : expérience de l'unité médico-judiciaire (UMJ) de Créteil

The use of psychoactive substances (alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, opiates) is common among persons in custody. We noted the habits of 1514 persons in custody, seeking the type of substance consumed, and compared the consumption of psychoactive substance with the offense alleged against them. Fifty-seven percent of respondents did not report consuming this type of substance, 25.8% alcohol only, 16.2% consumed only cannabis, 5.5% associated cannabis and alcohol, and 1.5% consumed cocaine and cannabis. The use of cannabis is found in all offenses to be significantly higher than in general population. Among people in custody, those who were accused of offenses unrelated to violence consumed less often cannabis than those who had committed violent offenses or damage to property. Alcohol consumption was associated with violent offenses, with the exception of robbery and aggravated robbery for which alcohol is significantly less observed than in the general population.
