This review summarizes recent advances in the coordination chemistry of organotellurium halides with an emphasis on the special features of the coordination patterns of the aryltellurium halides (ArTeX; X = Br, I) in transition metal carbonyl complexes (Fe, Co, Mn, Re, Ru). Unusual shortening of metal–tellurium bonds and inter- and intramolecular X → Te secondary interactions are observed.

► Transition metal complexes with novel organotellurohalide ligands are reviewed.
► Te center in organotellurohalide ligands is amphoteric.
► Shortening of metal–Te distances is typical for all metal-tellurohalide complexes.
► Hypervalent bonding in Te-halide complexes may be contributed from metal back donation.
► Competition between halogen X → Te and metal → Te donation is enhancing metal-Te and weaker weakening X → Te additional bonding.
