Synthesis of iron complexes [(η5-indenyl)FeL3]+ from the readily available[(η5-indenyl)Fe(η6-indene)]+

► One-pot synthesis of [(η5-indenyl)Fe(η6-indene)]+ was developed. ► [(η5-Indenyl)Fe(η6-indene)]+ reacts with 2e ligands giving [(η5-indenyl)FeL3]+. ► Protonation of bis(indenyl)ruthenium gives [(η5-indenyl)Ru(η6-indene)]+.
