• A MOF is changed into another one by soaking in methanol.
• Both extended structures consist of two interpenetrating MOFs.
• Both structures are featured with 12-connected Co5 clusters as the nodes.
A novel Co(II)-based metal–organic framework, namely {[Co5(OH)(H2O)(DMF)4] (BTE)3} (1; BTE = 4,4′,4″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris-(ethyne-2,1-diyl))tribenzoate) was obtained by solvothermal synthesis and structurally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, TG–DSC analysis, elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy. After soaked in methanol, 1 was turned into another compound 2, namely {[Co5(OH)(H2O)2(CH3OH)4] (BTE)3}, through single crystal-to-single crystal transform. These two structures are featured with some 12-connected Co5 nodes which are bridged by tripod BTE ligands into the interpenetrating frameworks. The gas sorption behaviors were examined.
