First principles calculation of field emission from nanostructures using time-dependent density functional theory: A simplified approach

► We compute the electron field emission current in nanostructures from first principles. ► Theoretical method applies time-dependent density functional theory. ► The method is applied to short carbon nanotubes and graphene sheets. ► Time propagation is obtained through the classical Crank-Nicholson method.
