Monodisperse dumbbell-like BaWO4 microstructures have been successfully prepared via a surfactant-free hydrothermal synthetic approach. The phase and morphology of the product were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectrum and scanning electron microscopy. Such tetragonal phase BaWO4 dumbbells were found to be constructed by abundant nanoparticles with 40–80 nm in diameter. Some influencing factors such as the reaction time, temperature and the volume of glycerol were revealed to play crucial roles in the formation of dumbbell-like BaWO4. A possible growth mechanism was proposed based on the experimental results. Moreover, the photoluminescence property of the product was studied.
