Shape effects on the electronic structure and the optical gain of InAsN/GaAs nanostructures: From a quantum lens to a quantum ring

► Shape and nitrogen effects are studied for dilute nitride quantum dots using k.p model. ► The s hole state can be lower than the p hole state for ring structure. ► Incorporation of nitrogen can reduce transition energy and increase transition matrix element. ► Volcano shape is preferred due to its greater optical gain properties.
