► A suitable change of variable transforms ellipsoidal QD into spherical QD. ► Energy levels of carriers in an EQD under an external electric field are calculated. ► Oscillator strength (OS) is calculated in terms of photon energy. ► Optical absorption coefficients (ACs) versus external electric field are calculated. ► ACs and OS decrease as the ellipticity constant and electric field increase.
