High density ion exchange resins are used in waste water treatment for removal of trace metals and are preferred for adsorptive separations in expanded bed. To explore such adsorbents, synthetic cation exchange resin INDION225H is selected for in-depth understanding in the present study. Physical characteristics of the selected adsorbent are studied through SEM-EDS and FTIR. Cu(II) is used as a model solute for the adsorption. Adsorption equilibrium studies are carried out and isotherm parameters are estimated. Adsorption kinetics for 50–150 mg/L feed concentration and thermodynamics at 20–60 °C are studied in the pH range of 6.3–6.5. The present study reveals the adsorption of copper ion on INDION225H follows two isotherms namely, Freundlich isotherm and Redlich–Peterson isotherm, which indicate multilayer adsorption. The adsorption energy has been found to be in the range of chemisorption.
