Lipid emulsion administration is an integral part of the treatment of local anesthetics intoxication. The mechanism of action is probably not restricted to local anesthetics removal. It includes impairment in the redistribution phase of local anesthetics kinetics, antagonization of their vascular effects, and improvement in myocardial contractility. Although failures of lipid solution to reverse local anesthetics toxicity have been reported, they remain part of therapeutic protocol after cardiac arrest combined with resuscitation maneuvers and epinephrine administration.
