The author concludes that radiology, associated with electronic apical localization, remains the method of choice for measuring root-canal lengths, and its correct application is fundamental for successful root canal treatment. The alternative procedure proposed in this article can be useful when there are relative or absolute contraindications to the use of radiography and/or when electronic apex locators are likely to produce inaccurate or unreliable results. Use of this third method, which is based on well-known mathematical principles, can help to reduce the need for radiography, shorten procedure times, lower costs, and last but not least, add a complementary resource to our technical armamentarium.
