Regeneration of Jaw Muscle—Potential Cellular Mechanisms

Changes in the occlusion, occurring because of ageing or dental/orthodontic/surgical therapies, can lead to microtrauma of the masticatory muscles. As in all skeletal muscles, trauma initiates a repair and regenerative process within the muscle tissue, but the response varies between different muscle groups. The effectiveness of this regeneration, and hence implied adaptability, can determine how an individual copes with such therapeutic interventions. This review will highlight the underlying mechanisms responsible.
