Concentration of internet usage and its relation to exposure to negative content: Does the gender gap differ among adults and adolescents?

This study assesses the variation in adults and adolescents' online usage behavior, particularly the concentration in the use of different internet services and the exposure to negative content. Results from a survey conducted in Seoul Korea in May 2006 shows that users who use a diverse range of online services are less exposed to harmful content. Also, the gender gap was smaller in the younger generation, but was still found in several dimensions and in some ways was even widening. The younger generation uses the internet in a more concentrated way and was exposed to more negative content online. Relationships between the range of internet use, exposure to negative content, and gender were found to be significant.
