► Dissolved organic P in Everglades water matrix characteristically variable. ► No correlation between P and C whereas N and C showed correlation. ► Low (<1 kDa) and high (>10 kDa) molecular weight fractions of organic matter enriched in P. ► Dissolved organic P must be considered to achieve total P < 10 μg L−1.
