Natural and directed biosynthesis of communesin alkaloids

Roles for acetate, mevalonate, methionine, tryptophan and tryptamine have been established for natural communesins, containing two indole moieties, but addition of dl-6-fluorotryptophan directed biosynthesis only to monofluorinated analogues.
