Spectroscopic, structural, dielectric, and electro-optic properties were studied in Pb0.90La0.10[(Yb1/2Nb1/2)0.15(Zr0.425Ti0.575)0.85]0.975O3 (PYN-PLZT) ceramics. Theoretically, phenomenological parameters, such as absorption and emission cross-sections were evaluated, based on the experimental data obtained in the ceramics, suggesting that the PYN-PLZT solid solution, which is with very high constitutional Yb3+ concentration without distorting the microstructure and adversely affecting the optical properties, can serve as a promising candidate in designing multi-functional optical devices. As a direct confirmation to the above analyses, as high as 5.0Â dB single pass gain was obtained in the material system. In addition, as high as 2.3Ã10â16Â m2/V2 quadratic electro-optical (EO) coefficients were obtained from the PYN-PLZT ceramics and the hysteresis loops were slim. All those data mark the material system out as ideal gain media in building fast response, low voltage and low power consumption, wavelength-tuning lasers.
