Fast responsive fluorescence turn-on sensor for Cu2+ and its application in live cell imaging

► A new effective fluorescent sensor based on rhodamine was developed to detect Cu2+. ► The sensor exhibited fast response, good selectivity at physiological pH condition. ► The sensor was an effective intracellular Cu2+ ion imaging agent.
