Enhanced violet emission from ZnS nanowires annealed in an oxygen atmosphere

► ZnS nanowires synthesized by a VLS mechanism showed ultraviolet emission. ► Intensity of the violet emission of the ZnS nanowires was enhanced significantly by O2 annealing. ► Eenhancement is due to O and Au impurity atoms as well as Zn and S vacancies.
