In present work takovite, anionic clay was synthesized by urea hydrolysis method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA-DTA). Using this anionic clay, the interaction of Cu(II) was studied in aqueous solutions in a batch system to study the effect of various parameters such as initial concentrations (5-25 mg L− 1), adsorbent dose (1-10.0 g/L), temperature (303-323 K), pH (3-7) and contact time (15-120 min.). The percentage removal increased with the increase in takovite dose, while the percentage removal decreased with increasing of initial concentrations of Cu(II). The synthesized takovite adsorbed 98.54% of Cu (II) from the synthetic waste water within 120 min at neutral pH, 7.0. The equilibrium studies show that adsorption follows Langmuir isotherm at all temperatures (303-323 K). Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed on different initial concentrations of Cu(II). Kinetic studies showed that the data followed pseudo-second order kinetic model. Negative values of Gibb's free energy change (∆G°), positive value of enthalpy change (∆H°) and negative value of entropy change (∆ S°) shows that the adsorption was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature. Used takovite can be easily regenerated by 0.1 M NaHCO3.
