Photo-induced birefringence in a nematic liquid crystal mixture doped with light-switchable mesogenic azobenzene derivatives

► Very high n2 ≈ 13 cm2/W nonlinear optical coefficient was measured. ► Experimental results are explained by light-induced changes of surface conditions. ► All-optical switching efficiency was amplified by azo-mesogenes.
