Towards efficient refinement of molecular potential energy surfaces: Ammonia as a case study

► A more efficient method for performing spectroscopic fits for complicated potential energy surfaces is proposed. ► The method is test for ammonia and found to give good results. ► The range of spectroscopically determined ammonia potentials is extended.
