Orthogonality of compact operators

In this paper we characterize the Birkhoff-James orthogonality for elements of K(X;Y). In this way we extend the Bhatia-Å emrl theorem. As an application, we consider the approximate orthogonality preserving property. Moreover, we give a new characterization of inner product spaces.
