Plaies et démence : une double peine pour le patient, un défi pour le soignant

An essential task for health professionals is to not ignore wounds, much less their severity, in order to not neglect their management and treatment. This expertise is not always easy to achieve in our elderly patients, especially when they present with dementia or a major neurocognitive disorder (MND) according to the latest DMS-5 classification. Developing customised strategies dedicated to this type of patient facilitates access to the wound by removing previous barriers in approaching the patient, then approaching his wound. Focusing attention on the perspectives and feelings of the elderly patient when their expressive capabilities, verbal or otherwise, have deteriorated but are not yet totally impaired provides true insight and real assistance for appropriate care.
