► Tonic GABAA receptor-mediated currents are present in neurons from epileptic brain. ► Epileptogenesis is associated with changes in expression of receptors involved in tonic inhibition. ► Tonic activation of GABAA receptors modulates single cell computations. ► We speculate about network consequences of such modulation.
