Local persistence and extinction of plague in a metapopulation of great gerbil burrows, Kazakhstan

► A putative mechanism of plague persistence is persistence within small hotspots. ► We present a metapopulation model of gerbil burrows, through which plague can spread. ► We test the minimal conditions under which plague can persist in hotspots. ► Hotspots cannot be the sole mechanism of plague persistence, for realistic parameters.
