High strength cellulose aerogels prepared by spatially confined synthesis of silica in bioscaffolds

► Silica/cellulose aerogels with improved mechanical properties are described. ► The composite aerogels have low density, high porosity and large specific surface area. ► This material could be used as biocompatible + biodegradable materials for practical application.
