Local area network inhibition: A model of a potentially important paraepileptic pathomechanism in neuropsychiatric disorders

► Epileptiform EEG abnormalities are frequent in psychiatric patients. ► Valproate may be effective in schizophrenia and 3-Hz spike-wave complexes. ► Valproate may be effective in borderline personality disorder and 5-Hz spike-wave complexes. ► Local area neuronal network inhibition caused by spike-wave complexes might explain such phenomena.
