► Left or right temporal lobe resections impair the learning of arbitrarily related designs. ► Patients did not differ from controls in learning pairs of locations. ► The right temporal lobe group was impaired in recognition of both design and location pairs. ► The findings implicate the mesial temporal structures in relational learning.
