Gender-specific psychosocial outcome for women with epilepsy

► Men and women with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and temporal lobe epilepsy were compared with respect to gender-specific differences. ► There were few differences between the two genders with respect to seizure characteristics and temporal course of epilepsy. ► Women with epilepsy had more anxiety and a higher unemployment rate although they attained higher educational levels. ► Women experienced more difficulty in finding marriage partners and had higher rates of divorce/separation as compared with men. ► This study confirms that women with epilepsy experience more psychosocial problems than men even when their clinical profiles are comparable.
