► Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) induces anxiety in mice. ► Anxiety occurs before the appearance of motor deficits. ► Tumor necrosis factor-α is responsible for the anxious behaviour in these mice. ► Tumor necrosis factor-α alters excitatory synaptic transmission in the striatum of anxious EAE mice.
