Lutein enhances survival and reduces neuronal damage in a mouse model of ischemic stroke

► Cerebral ischemia was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion in mice. ► Higher survival rate was found in lutein post-treatment group. ► Lutein was found to be anti-apoptotic, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory. ► Lutein is classified to be safe with minimal side-effects. ► Lutein post-stroke regimen may be beneficial for stroke patients.
