Ecology of hantaviruses in Mexico: Genetic identification of rodent host species and spillover infection

► Ecology of hantaviruses in rodents in Mexico was investigated. ► Genetic analyses of hantavirus and rodent cytochrome b genes were done. ► Peromyscus beatae is the host of Montano virus. ► Reithrodontomys sumichrasti is the host of Carrizal virus. ► The findings also suggest spillover events of hantaviruses in Mexican rodents.
