Mechanochemical destruction of mirex co-ground with iron and quartz in a planetary ball mill

► Mirex was quickly completely destroyed when co-ground with iron powder and quartz sand. ► Model was established to well correlate the efficiency with main operational parameters. ► Main products were identified as carbon and ferric chloride, with no organic residue found. ► Mechanism was proposed as dechlorination followed by carbonization.
