Poisoning of mixed matrix membranes by fermentation components in pervaporation of ethanol

▶ 60 wt% ZSM-5/PDMS mixed matrix membranes prepared. ▶ Drastic performance reduction for pervaporation of ethanol from fermentation broths. ▶ Sorption of fatty acids inactivates zeolite component. ▶ Pretreatment by solvent extraction is effective, but probably not cost-effective.
