A novel flushing strategy for diatom bloom prevention in the lower-middle Hanjiang River

► This paper developed an optimal flushing strategy for downstream bloom prevention, concerning flushing time and water quantity. ► Using this strategy, a lot of dam water storage could be saved when using flushing method to prevent blooms. ► The effect of this strategy was greatly related to the accuracy of weather report.
