► Hake from aquiculture is becoming an emerging species. ► The use of malachite green in aquaculture is prohibited. ► No methods exist for the redetermination of malachite green in Hake. ► The method was validated according to the 2002/657/EC. ► Limits of quantification were ≥0.5 μg kg−1.
