A risk and benefit assessment for visual-only meat inspection of indoor and outdoor pigs in the United Kingdom

► We assessed the risks and benefits of visual-only meat inspection for both indoor and outdoor pigs. ► Changing from traditional inspection, porcine tuberculosis and endocarditis were the conditions of most concern. ► The risk to human health was considered negligible for both TB and endocarditis, regardless of meat inspection method. ► There were not enough data to confidently determine the benefits from moving to visual-only meat inspection.
