Autotrophic nitrogen removal from ammonium at low applied voltage in a single-compartment microbial electrolysis cell

► Electrochemically enhanced biological nitrogen removal from ammonium was achieved. ► Assisted by a low applied voltage, ammonium offered electron to the external circuit. ► The applied voltage was much less than the voltage required for water electrolysis. ► Nitrogen removal was free of organic carbon addition.
