Synthesis and characterization of hexagonal faceted copper sulfide (Cu1.8S) nanodisks

Achieving single phase, morphology controlled synthesis of copper sulfide (Cu2−xS) nanoparticles is quite challenging whereas, the physical and chemical properties of Cu2−xS nanoparticles rely on their crystal structure and morphology. These reasons turned the importance towards the structure and morphological controlled synthesis of Cu2−xS nanoparticles. In the present work synthesis of crystalline, single phase copper sulfide (Cu1.8S) nanodisks by a hot injection method with rhombohedral structure and controlled morphology are highlighted. Influence of the solvent on crystalline phase and morphology was analyzed. Oleic acid and 1-Octadecene were used as solvents as well as capping agents at the temperature of 180 °C. Phase and the crystallinity of the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Optical properties were studied by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Morphological analyses were carried out through SEM and TEM. Elemental composition of copper to sulfur ratio was confirmed through Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of capping agent over the Cu1.8S nanodisks was confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).
